Pacesetters Bible School: Bible Questions - 1 Timothy 5:24

Bible Questions Answered: Sex Before Marriage

Question 14: 1 Timothy 5:24

"The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgement ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them" - 1 Timothy 5:24 (NIV)

Please, what does this verse mean? Could you kindly explain to me your own view of this verse.

A: This verse illustrates the benefits of consulting multiple translations. To get a better understanding of it, look at the following translation from the Contemporary English Version:

(24) Some people get caught in their sins right away, even before the time of judgment. But other people's sins don't show up until later. (25) It is the same with good deeds. Some are easily seen, but none of them can be hidden. - 1 Timothy 5:24-25 (CEV)

This is most likely in connection with the issue of church discipline, which Paul has been discussing beginning with verse 17, and indeed in various places through the epistle. One of the most difficult problems with church discipline is being fair and impartial, and reasonably certain that one is disciplining the right people at the right time. Paul assures Timothy that even the secret sins will eventually become known, and that good deeds cannot remain hidden either. Some things we will know immediately, but others are not so obvious.

This can also act as a warning to us about hasty judgment. We tend to want to act quickly against the obvious things, but while we are busy dealing with what is obvious, we may easily miss the things that are not so clear and obvious.
